I ended up returning that filter and getting dual tetra 3i's. What I did until the new filters arrived was I removed the hood, pulled the up as high as I could mount it with the second suction cup, and buffered the stream with a water bottle.

My Topfin Whisper Power Filter 20 won't suck up water. Best filter whisper or aqueon? I'm not happy with this filter at all, it just stops working for seemingly no reason.
The gaps on the intake are also large enough that it sucked up and killed two of my smaller fish. It's easy to put together and install, but I can't say anything positive beyond that. Going to toss it and try something else! It works well although I take filter out to rinse every other day to extend the life of filter and the water in the tank. Save time and money and less garbage made too! It may not be visually pleasing depending on your tank, it looks a bit too big for a 10gal.
I was really worried about the size of the whole thing but it cleaned up my foggy water and has kept it crystal clear since! If you don't mind getting the original foam filters and not the updated BioScrubber filter, they work like normal. They self start back up if you have a power outtage, no need to prime back up. All ten are working perfectly as new and as long as the intake slots are submerged with water, they are strong enough to pull water the rest of the way up to keep water flowing if you want to do a partial water change and not have to turn them off.
Great for fish with high oxygen requirements. All ten of them had the original foam filters instead of the BioScrubber filters. I had a large shipment of fish show If you don't mind getting the original foam filters and not the updated BioScrubber filter, they work like normal. I had a large shipment of fish show up the same day my filters showed up, so I couldn't risk returning them and trying to find ten replacements locally on the same day. I contacted chewy customer service and they could not send me the missing BioScrubbers to complete my order, but wanted me to do a return and reorder.
This was not feasible due to my fish needing them immediately. Just bad timing for getting not what I ordered. I was a little skeptical when I bought it but over time it has proven to be one of my best purchases ever for my little friends. Happy Turtles, Happy Life! I think it's just a cheaper alternative for smaller tanks, it's definitely very quiet no problems there. But, it doesn't keep the water clean very long we also started noticing bubbles almost like soap but kinda like a foam as well not sure what that's about.
Definitely will be looking into another one that will stay clean a bit longer and be a bit more effective. I've seen other say it keeps it clean for quite a while but I've changed the filer and had to clean the whole tank more than three times in one month and, it's only a GALLON fish tank.
